Kraków past and present (2)

Bożego Ciała Street in Kazimierz district of Kraków – in 1930s and 2009.
Showing some Jewish pupils walking the street just a few years before the German assault on Poland, this photo is especially sad.
Best viewed in original size.
Once a separate town, Kazimierz was founded in 1335 by King Casimirus the Great, and as its splendid churches and synagogues evoke, it was once a world of prosperity and tolerance. Two nations and two great religions existed here for centuries in relative harmony. It is in Kazimierz that the massive, Gothic churches of St Catherine’s and Corpus Christi sprung up alongside synagogues.
Krakow was one of the largest Jewish centers in Poland/Galicia. In 1938, Krakow’s Jewish population numbered over 60,000, or about 25% of the city’s total population of 237,000. In 1948, the post-holocaust Jewish population had been decimated to about 5,900.
Possessing some old photos of Kraków (taken before WWII), an idea occurred to me that it may be interesting to take photos today, in the same places. Not only to compare them, to see the obvious changes, but to have a possibility to look at the well-known places, which some of them I pass almost every day, from different perspective.

The New Computer History Museum Exhibition

Under construction, scheduled in open in January.
I took a tour yesterday, and it’s looking great. The main hall exhibition will be called “Revolution: The First 2000 Years of Computing.” 19 galleries with 1,100 artifacts.
On the right here is a DEC PDP-8e used to assist with brain surgery at Mass General Hospital.
Quick, toggle in the data…
In 1973, the PDP-8 was the best-selling computer in the world. It had 4K of core memory in 12 bit words.

Once my daughter, Amelia, learned how to click the mouse, she had to have her own computer… Mostly because she kept kicking me off my computer to play her pre-school games.

I got my SDR kit in the mail today from Tony Parks, KB9YIG. I will hopefully soon have a 40 meter receiver plugged into my computer from these tiny bags of parts.
I ordered it at the SDR website.
Here’s a link to some photos of the Finished Product.
Once finished, you plug this into your computer via the sound card and you can tune the band with free software that you use on your computer.
